WHY WOULD I CHOOSE PURE COSMIC ENERGY OVER KATARA???

#man remember that time people were like AANG DIDN’T GROW AS A CHARACTER #and you laughed so hard you almost peed but also you were crying#there were just bodily things happening everywhere for love of aang

yes. yes, i remember this. also lol so many people conveniently forgetting that … the avatar … NEEDS earthly attachments. the avatar NEEDS to be attached to people, to the world; the avatar NEEDS to love. dang, avatar susan yangchen outright tells aang this. his first duty is to the world, which means he must sacrifice his own spiritual needs—e.g., he must forsake personal enlightenment so as to continue the avatar cycle. that IS a sacrifice. when aang makes the decision to give up mastering the chakras—when he does, briefly, give up love of katara for love of katara—that is a sacrifice. we are told and shown, repeatedly, that the air nomads taught and were taught to forgo personal attachments. the fandom sees aang loving katara as a selfishness, and in one respect, yes, it is, but it is also a sacrifice. by loving katara—by marrying katara—by having a family with katara and living with her and their children—aang has given up that piece of his culture and his people, who are dead. maybe he did it for himself. maybe he did it for katara. maybe he did it for the avatar, for the world. maybe he did it for all of them. maybe it was for the better. that doesn’t make it any less of a sacrifice, any less of a loss. this is something aang struggled with throughout the series, with the depth and strength and power of his love for katara and knowing that by the teachings of his people he should not love her (jesus! guys! when they cross the water and he’s trying, he’s trying, he’s TRYING to detach, because of how much it hurt to lose appa and how angry and heartbroken that loss made him and how he knew that he couldn’t lose control like that again, and he keeps reminding himself of his people and what they believed and what HE believes, but he loves katara, he loves her and he can’t stop loving her), but he DOES love her. he does.
